Howell Park Country Club

When I was in college, I worked summers, weekends, and some afternoons at the public golf course system in Baton Rouge. One of the courses I worked at was Howell Park Golf Course. Each day, the same group of golfers came through to play their daily round. Afterwards they would all sit around the clubhouse chit chatting. I’d sit behind the counter, joining in the conversation from across the room while drinking a Coca-Cola out of a mini paper cup.

I learned a few things things while working at Howell Park Country Club:

  • A hard quarter is an actual quarter, as opposed to 25 cents made up of other monetary amounts
  • Howell Park Golf Course was referred to as the Country Club by the patrons, all who lived through the civil rights era and weren’t allowed to join private golf clubs back in their younger days.
  • A public golf course pro shop, similar to a firehouse, is the place where neighborhood mental patients like to visit when they are out of the hospital.
  • It is entirely appropriate to continue your golf game even if there is a hostage situation going on across the fence.
  • Collecting lost golf balls from Hurricane Creek can be a lucrative side business.
  • Mr. Johnny, a regular, was really blues musician Johnny Adams.

Mr. Johnny had the shiniest shoes that would catch the sun and burn my retina as he stepped out of his Cadillac each morning. He was leaning out of his Caddy early one morning, changing into his golf shoes and said to me, “You got to follow your dreams, Girl. You are going to be famous one day. I can’t explain this. I just know it.”

That was the last time I ever saw Mr. Johnny.

If you’ve been following along via my Stories, you If you’ve been following along via my Stories, you know we hopped a flight to Saint Lucia yesterday and took a five minute ride to @serenityatcbay - We originally had planned a family trip, but when an article assignment presented itself, we decided to combine business/leisure and arrived a few days early to get the job done.

@dalpozzal is currently napping on the swing bed in our private beach cabana, and it is a well-deserved rest. He just completed his latest annual ground school and has been working hard flying everyone else to their vacations. It’s time for his, now.

I am so grateful for these types of moments and it reminds me of that balance I frequently refer to. As difficult as life can be, it is equally as beautiful. Today is one of those beautiful days. And I am pretty sure this whole week will follow suit.

I am looking forward to celebrating my uncle’s retirement and spending time with him, my sister-ain’t, and their best friends in a few days.

Until then, I’ll continue my “research” enjoying frozen drinks in my Stanley cup. #hosted

Caught up with some New Englanders before the press events began. There was a Holland America Libe announcement I live-streamed for the @hollandamericafansofficial group I help manage, followed by an Alaska party and the kickoff reception featuring a mariachi band, paella, and maybe a few glasses of wine before the sun set. Tomorrow will be even busier but I have loved catching up with a few cruise industry friends!
This next session I attended at #stcglobal was mod This next session I attended at #stcglobal was moderated by @fran_golden_cruise - great discussion about private island destinations and this cruise trend for passengers. It isn’t about taking away from other port stops but more of an added value for guests. I’ll post more from the session later. So much goodness for future cruises!
