A Luxe Weekend in Midcoast Maine: Insider’s Guide to Food, Wine & Hidden Gems
Midcoast Maine is more than postcard-perfect harbors and lobster shacks. For me, it’s home…and it’s also where I’ve learned that luxury isn’t only found in five-star hotels, but in thoughtful details, fresh flavors, and unforgettable coastal moments. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or longer, here’s my insider’s guide to experiencing the Midcoast in style.

🛌 Where to Stay
- The Beehive (Cushing): Our own Maine luxury cottage rental, designed with travelers in mind. Think cozy coastal charm, thoughtful touches, and access to nearby nature preserves like Pleasant Point.
- Rockport Harbor Hotel (Rockport): A new favorite, this property features dual-sided fireplaces, separate sitting rooms, and balconies overlooking the harbor. Luxurious bathrooms with soaking tubs and walk-in showers make it an indulgent choice. Don’t miss breakfast or cocktails at their onsite Oak Room.
- The Norumbega (Camden): Recently named one of the top places to stay in Travel & Leisure. While I haven’t stayed overnight, I can vouch for their intimate cocktail and small plates experience on the porch…reservations essential!
- Youngtown Inn (Lincolnville): A charming inn with a standout restaurant, Astor & Rose, where the cocktails and food are consistently excellent. Every now and again, a few of us pop in after work for a debriefing cocktail!
- The Craignair Inn & Causeway Restaurant (Spruce Head): A peaceful inn located beside Clark Island Nature Preserve, offering water views, quiet walks, and a sense of retreat. The Causeway Restaurant serves high-quality meals and boasts one of the most extensive whiskey menus in Maine. For an added touch of luxury, guests can book a massage with the inn’s onsite therapist.

🍷 Food & Wine Experiences
- Cellardoor Winery (Lincolnville): A must-stop in the Midcoast and one especially close to my heart. The restored barn tasting room overlooks rolling vineyards and offers curated flights sometimes paired with local bites (if you can snag a seat for the Food & Wine Pairing events). Each pour tells a story, whether it’s a crisp Semillion or a rich Buoy White, and the atmosphere makes you want to linger. My favorite sip? The Blanc de Blanc, of course!
- 18 Central Oyster Bar & Grill (Rockport): Right next door to Rockport Harbor Hotel, with a rotating raw bar and refined seafood-focused menu.
- 40 Paper & Paper Plane (Camden): Two entirely different places, similar names, same town. Creative menus and stylish cocktails. Local favorites for good reason.
- Salt Wharf (Camden): Waterfront dining with a fresh, seasonal approach. The caviar topped deviled eggs are my favorite!
- The Vintage Room at 16 Bay View (Camden): Sophisticated cocktails in an elegant setting, plus a seasonal atrium bar worth seeking out.
- Natalie’s at Camden Harbour Inn (Camden): A Relais & Châteaux property. Sip a cocktail on the front porch for a truly special experience. Or, splurge for their tasting menu and pairings.
- Long Grain (Camden): Elevated Thai cuisine with a loyal following.
- In Good Company (Rockland): A cozy wine bar and restaurant perfect for lingering meals.
- Primo (Rockland): A nationally recognized farm-to-table restaurant…fine dining with soul.
- McLoon’s Lobster Shack (South Thomaston): Seasonal, casual, and one of my favorite “low-key luxe” experiences. Bring your own Champagne or sparkling rosé and savor a lobster roll with a view from Sprucehead Island.

🌿 Experiences & Hidden Gems
- Sailing the Harbors: Whether in Camden, Rockland, or Rockport, a sailing excursion is a must. Sunset sails with champagne are especially magical. When booking, check to see if your experience is BYOB!
- Hiking & Nature Walks: Trails and preserves are scattered throughout the Midcoast. My personal favorite? Pleasant Point Nature Preserve, right across from The Beehive…65 acres of quiet land with 1.5 miles of walking trail.
- Lighthouses: There are so many lighthouses dotting the coastline. Check out at least one while you are visiting!
- Shopping in Camden & Rockland: Stroll boutique-lined streets, where you’ll find everything from nautical-inspired décor to fine art and artisan goods.

Midcoast Maine blends small-town charm with elevated experiences. It’s sipping Champagne by the water, savoring oysters fresh from the sea, or curling up by a fireplace with harbor views. For me, the luxury is not just in the food and wine, but in the slower pace and the richness of everyday moments.
