Is Explora Journeys Worth the Price? A Realistic Look at the Cost of Luxury at Sea
When James and I booked our sailing with Explora Journeys, I knew two things right away.
First, this was clearly a luxury cruise line.
Second, I wanted to understand whether the price reflected true value, or simply the label of “luxury.”
If you’re researching Explora Journeys, you’ve likely noticed the upfront cost can feel high, especially when compared to mainstream or mid-tier cruise lines. But the real question isn’t whether it’s expensive (it is) the question is whether it’s worth it once you understand what’s included and how the experience actually unfolds.

Here’s the realistic breakdown.
What Explora Journeys Typically Costs
For a 7-night Caribbean cruise, pricing generally falls into two ranges:
- Last-minute sailings: approximately $5,000–$6,000 per person for an entry-level stateroom
- Advance planning: closer to $9,000–$10,000 per person, depending on itinerary, season, and availability
From time to time, Explora Journeys does offer fare sales, particularly on shorter notice sailings. Booking directly or working with a trusted luxury travel advisor can help you identify those opportunities.
At first glance, this price point can feel steep for some, especially if you’re used to seeing much lower advertised cruise fares. But that comparison only tells part of the story.

What’s Included, and Why That Matters
One of the biggest differences with Explora Journeys is how much is already included in the cruise fare. Once onboard, there was very little that required additional payment.
Included in the fare:
- Dining across multiple specialty restaurants
- A strong selection of wines, Champagne, and cocktails
- Wi-Fi throughout the ship
- Gratuities
- Spa access, including the thermal suite
- In-suite minibar and spirits
- Spacious staterooms (all with verandahs)
Perhaps the most underrated luxury of all: no card-swiping and no signing receipts. We never once had to present a stateroom card at a bar or restaurant. Over the course of a week, that absence of a running tab completely changed the feel of the trip.
There was no mental math. No “should we?” conversations. No end-of-cruise sticker shock.

Luxury vs. Luxury Done Well
Here’s where Explora Journeys truly separates itself.
It’s not just that everything is included, it’s the quality of everything that’s included.
From the moment we stepped onboard, there was a consistency that’s hard to describe but immediately felt. Nothing felt mass-produced, rushed, or “good enough.” Every detail, from the linens and glassware to the spa facilities and dining rooms, reflected a level of care usually found in high-end hotels, not cruise ships.
Quality showed up everywhere:
- In the dining rooms, where meals felt intentional rather than produced at scale
- In the wines and Champagne, which were genuinely enjoyable…not placeholders
- In the spa, where the thermal areas rivaled luxury resorts on land
- In the staterooms, where bedding, furnishings, and finishes felt truly upscale
- In the service, which was warm, confident, and unhurried
There was a cohesiveness to the experience. Nothing felt downgraded to protect margins. Nothing felt like an afterthought. When everything meets a high standard, you stop upgrading, replacing, or opting out, and simply enjoy what’s already there.
That consistency is rare, and seasoned travelers notice it immediately.
The Add-On Reality of Other Cruises
On many mid-tier cruise lines, the base fare is only the beginning. Drinks, gratuities, specialty dining, spa access, Wi-Fi, and other “extras” quietly add up over the course of a sailing.
When we looked back at what we spent on a previous Alaska cruise with a mid-tier cruise line, the total ended up being comparable once everything was added in. The difference was that on Explora Journeys, the cost was transparent from the start.
There were no surprises, just ease.
Who Explora Journeys Is Worth It For
Explora Journeys makes sense if you:
- Prefer an all-included experience without constant upselling
- Value fine dining, quality wine, and well-crafted cocktails
- Appreciate wellness amenities and quiet spaces
- Travel primarily as a couple or solo
- Want a calm, refined onboard atmosphere
It may not feel worth the price if you:
- Prioritize bargain pricing above all else
- Travel mainly for excursions and port-heavy itineraries
- Prefer a party-centric or highly structured cruise environment
- Need extensive family or kids’ programming
Booking Tips
- Book directly with Explora Journeys or through a trusted luxury travel advisor
- Watch for limited-time fare sales, especially close to sailing dates
- If your schedule is flexible, last-minute availability can offer strong value
- Choose Explora Journeys when the onboard experience matters as much as (or more than) the ports
So… Is Explora Journeys Worth the Price?
For us, the answer was yes.
Not because it was inexpensive (it wasn’t) but because the experience felt complete. The value wasn’t found in any single amenity; it was found in the absence of friction. Once onboard, we stopped thinking about money entirely and focused on rest, connection, and enjoying the moment.
In the end, Explora Journeys wasn’t just inclusive… it was intentional. And that level of quality, across the board, is what made the experience feel worth it.
