The Beehive Cottage Retreat: Lessons from Life on the Maine Coast
Every home tells a story, and for me, The Beehive is more than just a seasonal cottage on the Maine coast…it’s a retreat, a sanctuary, and a reminder that luxury isn’t always about extravagance. It’s about thoughtfulness, history, and connection to place. When James and I renovated The Beehive, we wanted it to reflect the Maine coast itself: rugged yet elegant, timeless yet welcoming, with details that whisper of the land and sea.

A Coastal-Inspired Interior
The Beehive’s interior is designed to honor its surroundings. The wood floors nod to the trees that frame the property. Granite countertops came from Little Deer Isle, carrying a piece of Maine’s earth into the heart of the kitchen. The bathroom floors are laid with smooth pebbled stones, a tactile reminder of the rocky shoreline nearby.
Above, the wood beams that stretch across the ceiling once belonged to a 1790’s barn in Northern Maine. Their hand-carved Roman numerals from the builder remain, telling a story of craftsmanship that predates us all. A ship-style ladder leads up to the loft, echoing the region’s nautical heritage.

A Family Legacy
The Beehive isn’t just a cottage…it’s a legacy. Originally built as a summer fishing camp for James’s grandparents and their children, it was the backdrop for countless family memories along the Maine coast. For decades, James’s mother lovingly cared for the property, tending to it season after season.
When the time came that the upkeep became too much for her, James and I stepped in as the next caretakers. We like to think of ourselves as the third generation entrusted with The Beehive, carrying forward its history while adding thoughtful touches that reflect how we live and travel today.
For us, the renovation was never about changing what it was, but about honoring its past while ensuring it could be enjoyed for generations to come. It remains a place of gathering, retreat, and memory-making for the wider family, and friends, just as it has always been.

Blending History with Comfort
The Beehive balances old-world charm with modern indulgence. On cooler spring and fall evenings, the wood stove warms the cottage, creating a cozy cocoon. The cast-iron clawfoot soaking tub (a double slipper design) harkens back to early settlers, but with all the comfort of contemporary luxury. It’s a place to linger, unwind, and soak in both history and serenity.

Life Spills Outdoors
The retreat isn’t confined to the cottage itself. A covered porch with rocking chairs offers the perfect perch for watching lobster boats bob in the tide or wildlife crossing the water. In summer, a cut-stone patio beckons with lounge chairs for sunny afternoons and an outdoor dining table for evenings of grilling and gathering. The Beehive was built not only to be lived in but to be savored, inside and out.

Lessons from The Beehive
Spending time at The Beehive has taught me that luxury doesn’t have to shout…it can whisper.
- Honor your surroundings. Let your space reflect where it stands.
- Blend history with modern comfort. The past enriches the present.
- Create everyday retreats. Rocking chairs, soft throws, or a shared glass of wine can transform ordinary moments into memories.
For me, The Beehive is more than a cottage…it’s a way of living. It embodies the idea that retreat isn’t about running away from life, but about creating a rhythm that allows you to breathe deeply, savor the details, and celebrate the simple luxuries all around you.
A Work in Progress, Just Like Life
While The Beehive cottage feels complete in its purpose, James and I are slowly turning our attention to the larger home on the property…the main house of The Beehive Estate. Renovations there are a more gradual journey, full of decisions, discoveries, and the inevitable surprises that come with updating an older home. Just as with the cottage, our goal is not perfection but preservation and renewal: honoring the history, adding thoughtful touches of comfort, and creating a space where family and friends can continue to gather. In many ways, the ongoing work mirrors life itself…always evolving, always teaching us patience, and always reminding us to find beauty in the process.
