7 Luxury Travel Experiences That Changed My Life
What makes a travel experience unforgettable? For me, it’s never just the five-star linens or the Michelin-starred meals. It’s the way a place makes me feel, the memories stitched into its walls, and the lessons it leaves behind. From cliffside sunsets in Bali to afternoon tea in London, luxury travel has given me more than indulgence, it’s given me perspective. These seven experiences stand out as the ones that changed me, each in its own way.
1. El Monte Sagrado Resort – Taos, New Mexico
Tucked into the mountains of Taos, El Monte Sagrado felt like an oasis of art, culture, and serenity. Surrounded by nature yet filled with Southwest charm, the resort taught me that luxury can be deeply tied to place. Here, I learned to slow down, breathe in the desert air, and feel grounded in the beauty of the earth.

2. The Gritti Palace – Venice, Italy
There are few places more enchanting than Venice, and The Gritti Palace embodies its magic. Overlooking the Grand Canal, I felt like I was living inside a painting. Chandeliers, frescoes, and centuries of history whispered from every corner. What I carried home from Venice wasn’t just opulence…it was the reminder that history itself is the most exquisite luxury.

3. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon – Iceland
Otherworldly is the only way to describe it. Staying at The Retreat meant sinking into steaming geothermal waters while gazing at lava fields dusted with snow. It was both primal and indulgent, reminding me that true luxury often comes from nature’s raw beauty. Iceland gave me a new appreciation for wellness and the healing power of the earth.

4. The Capital Hotel – London, England
Tucked in Knightsbridge, The Capital felt like a private club rather than a bustling city hotel. Afternoon tea here became an art form, and I soaked in the elegance of old-world London with a modern touch. This stay taught me that luxury isn’t always about scale, it’s about intimacy, charm, and being treated as though you belong.

5. The Four Seasons Resort – Chiang Mai, Thailand
Nestled among rice paddies with mountains rising in the distance, the Four Seasons Chiang Mai was a feast for the senses. Spa rituals, lantern-lit evenings, and the warmth of Thai hospitality made it one of the most transformative places I’ve visited. This was where I learned that luxury can mean connection…to people, to culture, and to nature.

6. Ayana Resort – Bali, Indonesia
If I close my eyes, I can still hear the sound of waves crashing below the cliffside bars at Ayana Resort. Bali has a way of weaving spirituality into every detail, and Ayana’s sunsets were pure poetry. For me, this experience was about balance: indulgence paired with reflection, showing that true luxury is found in harmony.

7. Houmas House Estate & Gardens – Darrow, Louisiana
Closer to home, Houmas House has always held a special place in my heart (hello, wedding day). With its grand oak-lined drive, lush gardens, and antebellum charm, it embodies Southern hospitality at its finest. More than the beauty, it reminded me that luxury can be found in creating new stories on older foundations.

Each of these experiences gave me more than a plush bed or a fine meal, they gave me perspective. Luxury travel, when done well, expands the soul. Whether it’s soaking in Icelandic waters or sipping tea in London, each journey becomes part of who we are.
If you’re planning your own travels, I hope my list inspires you to seek not just the grandest hotels, but the experiences that will stay with you long after the suitcase is unpacked.
Travel, at its best, teaches us more about ourselves than the destinations we visit. These moments…whether in Iceland’s geothermal waters or Louisiana’s lush gardens…are woven into my life story. If you’d like to follow more of my journey, I share regular reflections on Unpacked with Shannon DalPozzal and in my memoir, Of a Woman: The Journey to Becoming.
